Proper posture is essential, not only because it gives you the strength and balance you need during the stunt, but because it can also help to prevent injuries. Some of the most common problems with posture are curved backs and slumped shoulders. Unfortunately, poor posture is a result of how we carry ourselves throughout the day, but if you’re going to be a base, you need a straight back and squared shoulders.
Strong Legs And Arms
You’ve probably been told over and over again to lift with your legs, and that’s exactly what a good base needs to do. If you want to avoid injury in your back, it’s essential that you lift with your legs and arms, therefore both body parts need to be strong.
While it may look like bases do a lot of heavy lifting with their arms, don’t be fooled. A base’s legs are probably the most important part of the stunt, as they help to control how much weight is placed on their back. That being said, in order to be a better base, it’s important doing exercises and weight training that focus on the legs. Lunges are a great way to build muscle, and you can even do them at home!
On the other hand, you also shouldn’t neglect weight training for your arms. As we mentioned, bases do a lot of lifting, and arm and shoulder strength are essential for providing the flyer with stability. Be sure to include plenty of strength training for your arms and shoulders into your workout routine.
As you well know, there isn’t just one base per squad, and as such, it’s important that you work together with the other bases to perform a stunt successfully. It takes multiple bases to perform a stunt, which is why practice is essential for counting out the timing to the music and working on lifts in synchronization. It’s also important to make eye contact with the other bases during the stunt, as this will allow you to work better together.
